Hello!!! I'm Susan Carlson--the color-crazed lady behind Felted Button.

Susan Carlson of Felted Button--Colorful Crochet Patterns

I began crocheting as a squirmy 9 year old--taught by granny. My first project was a scratchy, VERY long scarf for my dad. Seems I didn't know how to stop--something my teachers in school told me often. But I did stop crocheting for many years while I got distracted with running, teaching High School science, marrying my sweetie and having 3 little kiddos.

But then inspired by some lovely crochet blogs, I picked up my hook and began hooking again. I was smitten--as it quieted my "noisy" brain and allowed me to make beautiful yarny things.

This whole designing adventure began when I opened my Felted Button Etsy shop to sell off some of the growing collection of crocheted items I had made. (Friends and family only want so many, right?) And I realized that my Technical Writing class at BYU was not such a waste of time as I started writing down the projects I made up.

I collect colorful glass, colorful yarn, colorful buttons, and colorful shoes! And when I'm not crocheting, I enjoy time with my family, thrifting, running and gardening.

Thanks for joining me on this creative and COLORFUL adventure. A good way to stay connected in the "Button" loop is on Facebook, Instagram (@FeltedButton), Pinterest and in my newsletter. If you are looking for pattern support, you may contact me at feltedbutton@gmail.com.

Those who move forward with a happy spirit will find that things always work out.                                                                   ~~Gordon B. Hinckley

  1. I love your patterns, they're so imaginative and beautiful! I was talking to others on a Facebook crochet list, and we all agreed that we'd love it if you created a Crochet Along! Everyone is finishing up Dedri's "Sophie's Universe", and wondering what to do next. Is there any chance of you ever creating one?

  4. Glad I finally subscribed to your blog. Love your eye for color and hope to be able to make some of your creations. I love the picture you shared of Willow Yarn. I am not familiar with it, but have been purchasing Stylecraft for my last couple of projects. I woud love to know if you have used Stylecraft, and can share your thoughts regarding the differences between the two. Also, if you have a recommendation for a good cotton yarn, would love that as well. I have used Sugar & Cream, but after a while it's like handling sandpaper on my hands and it can be quite a challenge for some patterns. I have quite a bit of it still, so trying to use it up before I take the plunge with a different brand.

    1. I have a number of designs with Stylecraft Special DK and I love it--particularly the color choices! This Willow Wash is a worsted rather than DK so has a bit more loft and heft to it, but comes in a superb array of colors! They also carry a DK Wash but it doesn't have nearly the color selection as the worsted. I also find Sugar & Cream to be a bit stiff. I have two favorites cottons, as of late. They are Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton--beautiful colors, very soft hand and very affordable. I also have designed with KnitPicks Comfy which again has a lovely color selection and is super soft, although a titch more spendy. I hope this helps, Michele! I'm really happy you found me and wish you the best!

  7. Hello, I'm thinking of buying the Dutch Girl pattern. I can picture it in 6-7 inch squares or maybe 8-9 inch and alternated with plain white or white with just enough pattern for texture. Do your instructions include a size that small? Thank you, Diana

    1. Diana,
I think that is a lovely idea! The multiples is included in the pattern so you can make it as small as you are planning. I would love to see the finished result so feel free to share pictures on my Facebook page (link above in the post ).

  8. I just started "Spring into Summer" corner-to-corner blanket tonight. It quickly has taken shape, a precise right triangle so far. The pattern was accurate, made sense, and was accompanied by helpful progress photos. Thank you so much, Susan!

  9. Hi! Love your stuff and I still think you need your own book (we spoke about it on Ravelry)! I know you have your patterns in several places and is there any site that you favor? I have accounts with every single pattern site so it doesn't matter to me other than you getting the most/all of the price. Your patterns are awesome and you should get the most if not all of the price. Thanks!

    1. Thank you, Sarah. I don't really have a preference regarding where you purchase. I do have a great discount on multiple patterns on Etsy if you would like to snag more for less. The codes are in my shop announcement. Thanks so much for your support and kind words! It really means a lot!

    2. Thanks for the info! I'm just so glad that you share your craft with us. Your way with color is just so amazing and I feel so accomplished when I finish one of your works. Plus every time I gift a FB creation the recipient literally is bowled over and loves it as much as I did in making it. You have a fan for life! I wonder if you ever get to teach? Like for the CGOA annual show or anything like that...I'm partial to that show as it is in Colorado every few years (my neck of the woods). Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your work! Namesté
