Spring into Summer with a FREE Crochet Blanket Pattern

Sharing is nice, right?! I worked up this awesome lightweight blanket with a nifty corner-to-corner stitch (sometimes called Crazy Stitch) and I thought it would be nice to share it for FREE with you!!

Spring into Summer Blanket--FREE Crochet Pattern
I'm calling it Spring into Summer Blanket

Spring into Summer Blanket--FREE Crochet Pattern

because it seems to be the perfect project for working on as things warm up (well, at least on this side of the world!).

I love the corner-to-corner stitching, because essentially you can work the width until just under half your yarn is used up (remember extra for the border) and then start to decrease. The repeat is so simple, too, that once mastered it doesn't take much brain energy. That's a good thing for me!!

But, of course, the thing I love the MOSTEST about this blanket is the COLOR!! The yarn is Red Heart Unforgettable in the Candied colorway. The super long color runs do all of the striping for you and guess what??? No ends!! Well, only when one skein ends and the other begins. You don't even fasten off to start the border!! Wahoo!

Isn't that border just so stinkin' cool the way it blends those colors? You never know exactly which one will happen next. It's a little happy color surprise every round.

You can find the pattern in my LoveCrafts shop here. If you would like to help support me in my little blogging venture, you can purchase the PDF for a small fee in my Etsy shop here. Your support means the world to me and allows me to continue blogging and providing free patterns! Thanks a bunch!

  11. I love this blanket so much, I just got the yarn for it and I'm working on it now. How many rows did you go before you started to decrease? I know you said use half your yarn then decrease but, I'm not sure how much it will need for the border and I've only got 3 skeins of the yarn. I guess I fear cutting myself short on the border.
Thanks so much for your help. It's really a beautiful pattern!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I meant to ask how long was your blanket in inches....not how many rows! (Gosh...I must of been having a bad day when I wrote that!)
Because I had to use a smaller hook (size F), I'm afraid my blocks are much smaller! I tried to use the bigger hook but, the yarn is so skinny that it was just too big of a hook to use an H hook. I got the same yarn you used but it's really skinny, close to a baby or sport weight yarn.
Anyways, thanks again for your help!

    2. In the sample blanket pictured, the blanket is square--and with the border 32" square--the cm measurement is outlined in the Dimensions section of the pattern. The yarn, although it says it is 4 medium weight, is more like a DK or light worsted than worsted, but I wanted a really soft drape so went with the suggested hook size. Fortunately, adjusting the dimensions of this stitch is simple!

  12. HI Susan, curious, how many skeins of yarn would you think for a lap blanket or a twin size? Thank you so much this is gorgeous!!

    1. Good question, Terry. There is a great guide for estimating yarn requirements based on weight of the yarn and size of the project on the Lion Brand site. http://www.lionbrand.com/faq/96.html
      Hope this helps.

  15. Beautiful! I just wish we had this brand of yarn in the UK. Will have to look for something similar.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't know about shipping costs to the UK, but you can find the Unforgettable directly on the Red Heart site. I also think almost any yarn with long color runs would give a similar striped effect without the color changes. I did see someone make this up in Stylecraft DK and changed colors each row. It was gorgeous!! Best to you!

  22. I just love this pattern! It was easy to follow and the pictures were a wonderful help. I'm not a big fan of most RH yarns, but this Unforgettable is so soft and the colors are so pretty...I'm glad I gave it a shot. I have a question...I have the body of the blanket done and I'm not sure what to so once I made that last group of dc. Part of the problem is I lost track of which is the back/front...so do I slip stitch to the ch3 and keep going to the left in that chain3 space, or do I slip stitch and then turn it and make my first hdc in the top of that last dc group? Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Either way works fine--as telling the RS and WS apart is not critical. If you follow the pattern precisely you will turn. But working a slip stitch into the final ch-3 and then working to the left beginning in that space works, too!

I just felt the need to tell you how much I love this pattern. I went to Hobby Lobby specifically to buy some RH Unforgettable to make it, but they apparently only sell their store brand anymore. So I found "Baby Bee Pomp" yarn in a rainbow colorway, and it is GORGEOUS. Even a short-striping colorway makes a beautiful blanket in this pattern. It's a bunch of little rainbow squares!

  29. Oh I love the colours. I wish we cld get yarn like this in the uk. I'm in hospital now 6 weeks and came across this pattern as am dying to crochet something. I'm a beginner to intermediate. I haven't had much practice as I've not had any yarn and I got all my stuff brought in from house including 15 crochet books all my hooks and yarn I just bought into hospital to start a project and all my stuff has been stolen! I just spent all my savings on yarn to make blanket as I've saved from january. Now I've nothing but can I ask if you've any other good patterns for blankets/afghans both for adult and baby that you cld share with me? Ill not be able to replace my stuff for another while as I'll have to save again but please send me any links or anything you can for any nice patterns. My email address is gemma_madden@yahoo.com in case you need it. I look forward to hearing from you. Ps. What size of blanket does this make and how did you get it so that the colours did not mix?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thank you, Gemma! This blanket was made with a self-striping yarn with very long runs of color so that it doesn't mix, but rather creates stripes. If you choose yarn with just a few inches before it changes color you get the mixing effect. You can find all of the patterns that I have designed--some free and some paid--at the top of this page under "My Patterns". A search of the web will get you to many more that are wonderful! Happy crocheting!

  32. You are so very welcome! I haven't worked with the Mosaic but would like to give it a try! If you are interested in making your blanket a rectangle rather than a square it is quite easily done by consistently increasing at one end (corner) and decreasing (once you have achieved the desired width) at the other end (corner). Here is a link to blog post that might help. http://creeksidecrochet.blogspot.com/2014/01/technical-thursday-c2c-sizing-and-shape.html

  35. I just love this pattern. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing it.

I was wondering if you could tell me about how much yarn is needed to do the border as written. I have Bernat Baby Softee which is a similar weight to what you have used. I'm a tight crocheter. I'm just wanting to be sure I have enough for my border.

Thanks again for your lovely pattern and assistance.

    Cheers,
    Shauna

    1. Good question, Shauna. I'm not certain as I didn't record the amount used for the border specifically, but I would guess just under a ball of the Unforgettable--which is about 275 yards (255 m). I hope this helps.

  36. I LOVE this pattern! I had so much fun working up the first half... But my decreases look awful. They are gapping, the blocks aren't the same size... I'm usually pretty great with patterns and maintaining consistent tension. Is there a trick I'm missing? Does it square itself if I keep working the decrease side? I've ripped this apart several times, made myself 6x6 blocks to check my understanding of the pattern and technique... And nothing. Susan, I love your patterns and you're always so helpful... Help? :) (also I know the pattern is over a year old, and free at that, so I TOTALLY understand if this is not your priority!)

    1. Kate,
I'm happy to help. Are your slip stitches across the decrease block too tight? I'm not really certain what is going on so maybe if you could message me a picture on Facebook that would be helpful. We'll get you moving along here, and square, too!

  37. This pattern is gorgeous and I love the idea of using a long color run yarn (goodbye loose ends to weave in later)!... I want to make a baby blanket but would prefer using a natural fiber yarn... and don't mind spending a little extra for this special baby. Any ideas? Thanks!

  42. I am smitten with this pattern! I had a couple Caron Cakes (Blueberry Cheesecake color), and gave this pattern a try. It was my first C2C project, and I absolutely love how it turned out! It's the best baby blanket crochet pattern for variegated yarn that I've tried so far––the texture is classy, and compliments the color changes very well. It's also not "holey," which is what I prefer in a baby blanket––blankets should help keep the kiddos warm, amirite?! :) Thank you so much for sharing this pattern with us! Even though I jumped on the bandwagon a few years after you published it, I'll definitely be using this pattern again and again!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Do you have any suggestions for how to decide when to start decreasing? I'd planned to use 3 skeins like the pattern says, but I know I'll need to save enough yarn for the border, and I also heard a tip that decreasing somehow uses more yarn than increasing. I'm on my second skein now and wondering when I should begin decreasing so I don't run out of yarn sooner than I want to.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you follow the pattern and begin decreasing after 42 blocks and have met gauge, then you should have enough to complete the border. If you are a bit big, stop after Row 40 or so, since those are the longest rows anway. The only reason decreasing might take a bit more is becauase of the slip stitching to begin the next row, but that is minimal. Hope this helps.

This is beautiful.. but I will not buy red hearts unforgettable yarn ..I bought it to make a shawl red heart had and the yarn was thick then thin almost as this a crochet cotton to make doilies ..the pattern called for an h hook and I felt it was too large .. did you find this problem with the yarn? It has a wonderful feel and look ... I just found the yarn to be inconsistant in its size. I do love the look of your Afghan it is beautiful ..think I would find another yarn to make it with... thank you for sharing such a beautiful craft.

    1. You are welcome! I did find the yarn to do that, but don't mind the thickness changes. To me it adds to the texture and unique quality of the yarn. There are now many other choices for long color running yarns on the market, though.
