So I came up with this simple little textured cloth that works up without much brain energy but can be made in any colors or any size. Best part...
Because my mom has always taught me, "Sharing is nice."
And there is still time to make several for Mother's Day. A sweet and thoughtful gift, I think.
Materials:
H hook (5mm)
Worsted Weight Kitchen Cotton Yarn (less than 100yards/90m) -- the solid-color cloths shown are made with Bernat Handicrafter and Lily Sugar n Cream while the striped cloths are made with I Love This Cotton!
Dimensions:
9 inches/23cm square
Note:
~If you are interested in making your cloth a different size, adjust the width by chaining an odd number of chains to the desired width and then repeating the pattern row (Row 2) to the desired height.
~You will be working sc into dc and dc into sc across the row. This keeps things straight and provides the lovely texture.
~Make yours multi-colored by changing colors throughout where you want for some fun variety.
Mama's Wash Cloth Pattern:
ch 31
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, (sc in next ch, dc in next ch) rep to end, turn (30 sts)
Row 2: ch 1 (does NOT count as st), sc in first dc, dc in next sc, (sc in next dc, dc in next sc) rep to end, turn (30 sts)
Rep Row 2 until desired height (approx. 9in/23cm) or until cloth is square
When you reach the desired height, do not fasten off, if you choose to work the border. If you opt not to complete a border, fasten off and weave in ends.
Border: (Optional)
Complete reverse sc (crab stitch) in each st along top and bottom edges and evenly along the sides. Fasten off and weave in ends.
These were completed with some awesome color changes and without the border. I particularly love the purple stripey one.
The litttle wiggles of the stitch pattern are not so obvious in a single color but really "shine" when worked in a contrasting color. And both sides are so terrific, I think! The purple striped one is made by working three rows of purple (main color), one row of a contrasting color...repeated 7 times and followed with three more rows of the main color.
If you haven't stayed in the "Button Loop" you can follow me around in my colorful crazy crocheting fun...

Thank you so much for this pattern. I think these will be my first washcloths.

DeleteThank you for sharing this. I did the first one in two colors, but I can't wait to try one like the purple one above.
ReplyDeleteThe yarn in the first, second, and sixth pictures (red with multiple primary colors) has grabbed my attention and won't let go! I have searched the web for Lily Sugar and Cream yarns and am coming up empty-handed. Do you think this is a discontinued yarn? Do you have any further specifics that would further aid my search?? If you have as much yarn on hand as I do, I may be asking the impossible; but my husband always says it never hurts to ask so.... Any help you can offer is appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI believe it is Bernat Handicrafter, but not certain of the color and don't know if it is still available. Ravelry is a good source for discontinued yarns.
DeleteThanks so much!!
DeleteI thought I was weird because I love handmade dishcloths. They are the first things I look for at craft shows. Glad to know I am not alone.

ReplyDeleteI am a novice so my question may be a DUH to anyone experienced. I was shopping for yarn today and the cotton yarns were not soft. Is there a reason the washcloths could not be made with a soft acrylic yarn? There were several that were called SOFT in the names and they felt sooo good. Your response would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteNot a duh question at all, Patti. Cotton is used because it is absorbent while acrylic is not at all. It's kind of like trying to dry with an acrylic towel, the water just wipes around and doesn't pick up. Once the kitchen cottons are wet and washed they become softer. Even a mostly cotton blend would work.
